Esoteric Rubidium Master Clock Generator

A 'clock' is a pulse signal that is used as a reference signal for all digital circuits. Every piece of digital gear has an on-board clock oscillator, and a high-quality clock is vital for precise, jitter-free signal processing. The G-01X master clock generator is an external clock device designed to supply atomic precision clock to digital devices (such as a transport, D/A converter, Super Audio CD player, or network audio player) equipped with dedicated input terminals. The G-01X can supply clock signals with a significantly higher degree of purity and stability than clocks generated by connected devices themselves, and thereby significantly improves the sound quality.

Ultrahigh Precision Rubidium Oscillator Installed as the Heart of the Unit

An extremely high precision American-made rubidium oscillator with a frequency precision of ±0.05 ppb or ±0.00005 ppm is used as the core of this extraordinarily accurate timing device. This oscillator module has been manufactured to ESOTERIC’s demanding specifications with sound quality and stability being given top priority. The sound quality one would expect from a high end model has been achieved.

The “Wide Range Clock Buffer Amplifiers” developed for the Grandioso G1 flagship model are adopted to provide an even wider frequency range than ever before. These discrete circuits using high-speed transistors with excellent high frequency performance are separated for each output terminal to greatly contribute to major improvements in sound quality by providing an accurate and stable timing signal to audio devices.

The G-01X has the “Adaptive Zero Ground” circuitry inherited from the Grandioso G1 between the internal rubidium unit and the buffer amplifiers. The "Adaptive Zero Ground" mode actively drives the ground signal to 0 volts and greatly reduces noise (random jitter) caused by variation in the ground voltage. The user can select between the adaptive mode and the normal mode, for different sound characteristics according to their listening preferences.

A newly-designed power supply is adopted to maximize the performance of the new “Wide Range Clock Buffer Amplifiers”, with a separate power supply regulator assigned to each of the independent buffer amplifiers. The amplifier and power supply are divided into blocks to ensure drive that is both clean and powerful. A large toroidal transformer is used as the main transformer and a dedicated El core transformer is used for digital control. A series of multiple capacitors are used for the ripple filter circuit and Schottky barrier diodes are used for quick response to support fast digital processing, which assists the accuracy of the clock’s signal generation.

The G-01X can supply a clock signal to a maximum of eight devices. Output can be switched ON and OFF for each terminal. The unit has four 10 MHz sine wave clock output terminals. The other four output terminals (A × 2 and B × 2) enable clock signals to be output at 100 kHz, 10 MHz (square wave), and the basic frequency of 44.1 kHz/48 kHz, up to a maximum frequency of 22.5792 MHz/24.576 MHz, and separate output frequencies can be set for each terminal.

Esoteric Master Clock Generator

New custom ultra high precision crystal oscillator

A 'clock' is a pulse signal that is used as a reference signal for all digital circuits. Every piece of digital gear has an on-board clock oscillator, and a high-quality clock is vital for precise, jitter-free signal processing. The G-02X is an external clock device designed to supply ultrahigh precision clock to digital devices (such as a transport, DAC, SACD player, or network audio player) equipped with dedicated input terminals. The G-02X can supply clock signals with a significantly higher degree of purity and stability than clocks generated by connected devices themselves, and thereby significantly improves the sound quality.

The core of the unit features a custom OCXO (Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator) newly developed by ESOTERIC that is comprised of an oven that maintains a constant internal temperature, a crystal oscillator, and an oscillating circuit. This OCXO was designed for high audio quality based on the wisdom of the Grandioso series to provide an excellent center frequency precision (±0.01 ppm Typ), and reduces phase noise by approximately 3 dB (Measured at an offset frequency of 100 Hz) compared to previous model.

The unit adopts the "Wide Range Clock Buffer Amplifiers" developed for the Grandioso G1. These discrete circuits utilize high-speed transistors with excellent performance at high frequencies and are separated for each output terminal to contribute to improved sound quality.

Luxurious Materials and Powerful Current Output Capacity

The N-05XD’s Master Sound Discrete DAC is the most revolutionary two-channel stereo DAC circuit in Esoteric history, and is based on the original circuit developed for the Grandioso D1X Monoblock D/A Converter. As an extension of the D1X’s design philosophy, an abundance of luxurious materials have been invested in the construction of N-05XD’s Master Sound Discrete DAC, including 16 separate elements for each channel. Each of these 16 elements, including such key components as the clock driver, logic circuitry, capacitors and resistors, are kept fully independent in order to ensure the purest sound output with virtually no loss of musical energy.

Advanced Digital Processing Capability...

The N-05XD is also equipped with Esoteric’s exclusive Delta-Sigma (ΔΣ) modulator, which supports 64-bit/512Fs audio frequency sampling. To perform D/A conversion on par with its excellent DSD and PCM characteristics, separate FPGA* digital processing algorithms were developed for each step in the conversion process. This enables the N-05XD to extract the optimum sound quality from all compatible digital sources.

Network Engine with Dedicated Linear Power Supply...

As a source component, the N-05XD is equipped with a dedicated high-end network audio engine that supports DSD 22.5MHz playback. The key component in this design is its dedicated linear power supply. With a component configuration equivalent in scale to that of Esoteric’s top-of-the-line N-01XD, the N-05XD’s large toroidal transformers, high-capacity filter capacitors, Schottky barrier diodes, and high-end super capacitors — which feature a whopping 2,333,333μF in total capacity — and forgoing the use of any noisy switching elements, the N-05XD realizes a singularly impressive sound brimming with an analog-like sense of reality.

K-01XD - VRDS (Vibration-Free Rigid Disc-Clamping System) is a core technology of ESOTERIC’s CD/Super Audio CD transport mechanisms that has been a key point of focus since the brand’s founding. The system firmly clamps the disc onto a turntable of the same diameter, thus eliminating both the rotational vibration of the disc itself and the effects of any extraneous mechanical vibration. Any latent disc warpage is also corrected by the turntable to significantly improve the relative optical axis accuracy of the optical pickup and the disc pit surface, while also minimizing servo current. This all combines to significantly reduce disc read error and further enable breathtaking sound quality.

The VRDS mechanism has undergone continuous development and improvements for over 30 years. Throughout its long, illustrious history, one prominent highlight has been the debut of the VRDS-ATLAS platform, which offers the pinnacle of perfection and sound quality. The K-01XD is equipped with VRDS-ATLAS mechanisms that have been specifically customized for each model in order to carry on the full qualities of the VRDS-ATLAS reference mechanism used in our flagship models, the Grandioso P1X and K1X.

The K-01XD’s new ATLAS 01 disk transport features a 20mm-thick SS400 steel bridge that is identical to that used in our high-end Grandioso models. The mechanism boasts ultra-high rigidity and a weighty design to damp out any vibration that could affect sound quality. The transport’s duralumin turntable also has a well-earned reputation for excellent sound quality, and its solid steel bridge is larger than that for the VRDS-NEO, using a one-point spindle bearing design that minimizes friction and rotational noise through its point-contact thrust bearing, which utilizes the same steel ball featured in the high-end models.

The N-01XD’s Master Sound Discrete DAC is the most revolutionary two-channel stereo DAC circuit in ESOTERIC’s history, and is based on the original circuit developed for the Grandioso D1X Monoblock D/A Converter. As an extension of the D1X’s design philosophy, an abundance of luxurious materials have been invested in the construction of N-01XD’s Master Sound Discrete DAC, including 32 separate elements for each channel. Each of these 32 elements, including such key components as a clock driver, logic circuitry, capacitors and resistors, are kept independent to ensure the purest output with virtually no loss of musical energy.

The N-01XD includes ESOTERIC’s exclusive Delta-Sigma (ΔΣ) modulator supporting 64-bit/512Fs audio frequency sampling. To perform D/A conversion on par with its excellent DSD and PCM characteristics, separate FPGA* digital processing algorithms were developed for each conversion process. Unique ESOTERIC-HCLD* Output Buffer Circuit with Enhanced Current Transmission...

The N-01XD’s ESOTERIC-HCLD output buffer amplifier boasts an astonishing high-speed slew rate (response speed) of 2,000V/µs. Current transmission and speed—the most important factors in the design of any analog output circuit—have been pushed to the limits, while the array of EDLC** super capacitors used in the buffer circuit’s power supply provide a staggering capacitance of 250,000μF per channel for solid bass support and exceptional reproduction of all the dynamism of music coupled with a sense of realism that is truly breathtaking. *HCLD: High Current Line Driver **EDLC = Electric Double-layer Capacitor

In addition to its standard XLR and RCA line connections, the N-01XD is also equipped with Esoteric’s own ES-LINK Analog current transmission system. Taking full advantage of the robust stream of current supplied by its HCLD buffer circuitry makes the N-01XD less susceptible to the detrimental effects of signal path  impedance, ensuring more pure and powerful signal transmission that maximizes system potential to deliver outstanding analogue audio output transmission when connected to comparable components.

Transport Connections for Super Audio CD playback...

The N-01XD supports Esoteric’s proprietary ES-LINK digital wideband transmission standard. An Esoteric transport can also be connected using either two HDMI cables or a single XLR cable to enable playback of Super Audio CDs. *ES-LINK is an ultra-wideband digital interface developed exclusively by Esoteric. Like our flagship Grandioso D1X Monoblock D/A Converter, the N-01XD’s ES-LINK has also been upgraded to Version 5 to support wide-range transmission using two HDMI cables (Max: 22.5MHz DSD  or 768kHz/48-bit PCM). The HDMI multi-cable configuration is used for fully balanced audio data, LR clock, and bit clock signal transmission. In contrast to regular digital transmission, no processing is required for signal modulation at the sending side or for demodulation at the receiving side, thus allowing a significant reduction in the DAC’s digital processing load to help realize pure digital signal transmission with near perfect optimization.

The N-01XD is also capable of MQA decoding for digital input sources(*). In addition to conventional network input, MQA-CD playback is also possible when used in combination with a CD transport. *Only Grandioso P1X supports ES-LINK connection. (As of June 2020)

Esoteric Sound Stream is an Apple iOS/Android network playback app for smartphones and tablets designed with an emphasis on both sound quality and intuitive operability. Musical tracks can be easily selected using the smartphone/ tablet to create a customized playlist for later playback. All screens have been intuitively designed for simple operation and access to playlists and libraries, making it easy for anyone to use. Yet it also offers an extensive range of refined features that meet the demands of even the most experienced users. Key to this achievement is a superb search and retrieval function that fully utilizes tag information. Images can also be stored using the app, enabling the user to instantly scroll through album artwork and libraries according to artist, year of recording, composer or other categories. This use of tag information even allows tracks that have the same name but different formats to be easily identified onscreen.

The key to the powerful and deep, rich sound provided by the N-01 and D-02X lies in their high-performance power supplies. The N-01XD features significant enhancements to its power supply to ensure it delivers even more robust, lifelike sound. Its built-in D/A converter features a total of four independent toroidal power transformers, one each for the right and left channels, digital circuits, and network module. The DAC's regulator utilizes a low-feedback DC regulator for minimizing feedback in a discrete configuration that uses no integrated circuits, but instea adopts technology obtained in the development of the Grandioso P1X Super Audio CD Transport and D1X Monoblock D/A Converter. The result is a powerful, expansive sound.

Network Module Features High-Sound-Quality Linear Power Supply...

Thanks to recent breakthroughs in the development of our network transports, the network module uses a new power supply designed with linear elements customized for audio use instead of a regulated switching power supply. Combined with its high-capacitance filter capacitors, Schottky barrier diodes, EDLC (Electric Double-Layer Capacitor) super capacitors boasting a capacitance of 2,333,333μF, and other high-end components, this enables the N-01XD to deliver dramatically improved sound quality.

The N-01XD also includes the same Grandioso Custom VCXO II high-presicion clock developed for the P1X and D1X, which features extremely low levels of phase noise and excellent centering accuracy (±0.5ppm). The N-01XD's clock output enables high-precision clock synchronization using the Grandioso Custom VCXO II as a master unit by simply connecting it to a transport with a clock input port. An external Grandioso G1 or G-01X Master Clock Generator can also be connected to synchronize interna circuits with a 10MHz clock that rivals atomic clocks in its precision, thus realizing even higher levels of sound quality. USB Audio Interface Supports 22.5MHz DSD and Asynchronous Transmission...

The N-01XD is further equipped with USB-B port for connecting to a computer. The driver and ESOTERIC HR Audio Player (music player application) can be downloaded for free from the ESOTERIC website. The audio interface supports high sampling playback at 22.5MHz DSD and asynchronous transmission for enabling high-fidelity playback from even studio master quality sources. In addition to its USB ports, three types of digital input ports(XLR x 1, coaxial x 2, optical x 1) have also been provided for connection to a wide range of digital devices.

The N-01XD features a highly rigid chassis design incorporating thick, dual layer aluminum and steel panels and a double-deck interior structure that both suppresses interfence between circuits and drastically shortens power supply wiring to achieve the ultimate in sound quality. Additionally, every slot and groove in the chassis has been precisely laser-machined to effectively reducd vibration. The chassis' entire 5mm-thick steel bottom panel is supported by our own ESOTERIC pinpoint feet (patent No;JP4075477,JP3778108) to ensure complete mechanical grounding that further protects the unit against the effects of vibration.

The enclosure's top panel utilizes a screwless semi-floating structure that further contributes to the N-01XD's open and expansive sound.

Esoteric Grandioso - Super Audio CD / CD Transport

An unprecedented transport mechanism that invites you to the furthest reaches of sound! VRDS Technology VRDS (Vibration-Free Rigid Disc-Clamping System) is Esoteric's unique CD/Super Audio CD transport technology, which has been specially designed to clamp the disc to a same-diameter turntable in order to eliminate the disc's rotational vibration, as well as any extraneous vibration emanating from the mechanism itself. It also corrects any warpage of the disc dramatically improving the accuracy of both the optical pickup and the disc  pit layer's corresponding optical axis while also minimizing servo current. This all adds up to dramatically reduced disc read error for exceptional audio quality.

It has been 16 years since the VRDS-NEO Super Audio CD transport mechanism first debuted in 2003. Improving on the NEO transport posed a difficult challenge, as it had long been praised as offering the highest audio reproduction performance in the industry. However, the design was totally reengineered from the ground up, resulting in a completely new platform that boasts unparalleled levels of structural refinement and audio fidelity.

The Highest Rigidity and Heaviest Construction in the History of VRDS...

ATLAS boasts the highest rigidity and weight in the history of VRDS mechanisms. With its larger new SS400 steel side panels and bridge, the ATLAS is 27% heavier (6.6kg mechanism unit, 13.5kg including base) than the NEO, achieving both exceptional rigidity and impressive tone. It also dampens any and all vibration that might adversely affect audio quality. The turntable is machined from solid duralumin for excellent audio quality, and its spindle features a newly designed thrust bearing system. This friction-free one-point spindle support system ensures smooth, noiseless turntable rotation.

One of the keys to achieving the quietest mechanism in VRDS history is mechanical grounding technology that efficiently dampens vibration. By adopting a wide and low profile for the mechanism's design, the entire construction now features a low center of gravity. The turntable's drive system has also been refined and its motor moved to below the turntable from its previous position above the bridge, thus shortening the route for grounding vibration and greatly reducing mechanical noise.

The tray's form has been designed for the least possible resonance by minimizing hollowing, and boasts exceptionally smooth opening and closing operation with very little play. The use of special vibration-damping elastomer resin also further minimizes tray resonance during music playback.

Esoteric's own ES-LINK digital interface utilizes HDMI cables for signal transmission. With the introduction of the P1X/D1X, ES-LINK has been further upgraded to Ver. 5 and supports an even wider range of superior sound quality formats (Max. 22.5MHz DSD and 768kHz/48-bit PCM). HDMI's multi-conductor structure permits full balance transmission of audio data and LR clock and bit clock signals. This differs from regular digital transmission as signal modulation is not required on the sender side and demodulation processing is not required on the receiver side, thus dramatically reducing digital processing loads on the DAC side and enabling ideal digital transmission.

Dual-Chassis Construction with Separate Power Supply...

The P1X's power supply, as a fundamental source of vibration, has from its very first iteration been designed and constructed as a separate yet integral unit in order to achieve the quietest possible disc read characteristics and higher audio quality.

Four Independent Toroidal Power Supply Transformers...

The power supply incorporates a total of four independent toroidal transformers, which provide each circuit with a clean and powerful supply of electricity.

Both the P1X and D1X feature low-feedback discrete DC regulators. The reduction in feedback level helps achieve a vibrantly energetic sound that seemingly overflows with a sensation of openness.

Both the P1X and D1X include EDLC* super capacitors throughout their power supply circuitry. The P1X utilizes a total of 38 EDLCs (with a combined capacity of 1,400,00μF or 1.4F), while the D1X features a total of 50 EDLCs (for a combined capacity of 1,300,000μF/1.3F) for the pair. Through this maximization of power supply capacity, remarkable improvements in low-range resolution and audio quality have been achieved. * EDLC(Electric Double-Layer Capacitor): Developed as next-generation power devices for the electric vehicle industry, these capacitors are attracting wider attention as cutting-edge technology due to their exceptionally high capacitance.

Special attention has also been paid to chassis construction as a way of thoroughly controlling vibration. The lower chassis, where the main components are secured, features a multilayer structure formed of multiple steel plates. Power supply transformers and other components are secured to separate layers in a three-dimensional layout that minimizes reciprocal interference between the various components. The enclosure's thick, heavyweight aluminum panels and Esoteric's unique pinpoint feet(Patent No. 4075477 and 3778108) further impede the transfer of low-level vibration.
