Brinkman Bardo - Magnetic Direct Drive Analog Turntable

The picture shows the standard model »Bardo« with the magnetic motor drive. The »Bardo performance« features the metal cased power supply that is used for the »Balance« and »LaGrange« turntables instead of the standard power supply. The result is a more defined bass response and a wider room imaging.    The tonearm base of the »Bardo« can be rotated and fixed without play to allow a simple and precise tonearm adjustment for all tonearms between 9” and 12”. We drill the base according to the tonearm that the customer chooses.    The output sockets can be found on the back of the turntable, they can be equipped with RCA or XLR sockets, and it is also possible to install tonearms with DIN connectors or fixed cables.    The two possible speeds, 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, are selectable by a switch at the front of the turntable and can be fine adjusted via two screwdriver holes that are located next to the switch.

The »Bardo« has a magnetic direct drive motor that was developed by Helmut Brinkmann and is produced in our factory. There is only one bearing for the motor and the platter, a circular magnet is mounted into the bearing of the platter and is concentrically driven into rotation via coils on the circuit board under the magnet. An electronic circuit drives the coils via two magnetic sensitive resistors that react to the magnetic fields into a highly constant and slow circular movement.    Many of the known direct drive turntables were constructed for studios and radio stations where it was necessary to have very quick start-up times of less than a second which was achieved with high torque motors that speed up and stop the motor very rapidly. This caused heavy cogging effects accompanied by high wow & flutter numbers. To avoid this, we worked long on a proprietary motor control that transfers just enough energy to the motor for it to remain at constant speed. The motor’s stator consists of four specially designed field coils, which are mounted concentrically with high precision around the platter bearing. Based on listening sessions we decided to forgo the typical 90-degree mounting angle in favor of a non-standard 22.5-degree roster, which, due to the magnetic fields overlapping, further reduced cogging. The motor’s rotor also acts as the sub-platter and carries a magnetic ring with eight poles on its underside. Inside the motor, the rpm of a speedometer disc is measured and turned into variable voltage that is fed into a control circuit where the rpm is compared to the reference voltage that is adjustable via the trim pots. A separate heater for the bearing, as included with the »Balance« and »LaGrange« bearings, is not necessary. The motor circuit is kept under current all the time, just the speed is switched to zero or 33 resp. 45. In this way, the bearing is kept warm by the quiescent current of the motor drive. Brinkmann developed the versatile Spyder, effected evolutionary improvements to our epochal Balance and introduced Nyquist, widely considered the world’s finest Digital-to-Analog Converter. The lessons learned creating these state-of-the-art components suggested ways in which we could advance our direct drive concept to a higher level of performance. Brinkmann proudly introduces Taurus: the finest direct drive turntable we know how to build.   Like Oasis and Bardo, Taurus features our bespoke, magnetic field motor, built to Brinkmann’s proprietary design specifications. Our unique „Soft“ speed control and platter are likewise retained; however, that’s where the similarities end. Built on a massive 40mm thick Duraluminum chassis inspired by Balance, Taurus delivers deeper, more visceral bass combined with the dynamic agility and forward drive which characterize all Brinkmann direct drive turntables. Taurus‘ chassis has been resonance-optimized to banish mechanical noise and enable the deep-black background for which Brinkmann turntables are renowned. In a further homage to our statement turntable, Taurus offers wireless speed selection via an engraved aluminum disc reminiscent of Balance’s hard-wired control.

Yes, balance wasn’t the only inspiration for Taurus. The development of Spyder; specifically, the ability to easily add or remove tonearms, prompted Brinkmann to develop a proprietary „Collar System“ which enables our newest turntable to easily convert from a one-arm to a two-arm system and vice-versa. Virtually all tonearms from 9“ to 12‘‘ length are accommodated. Like all Brinkmann turntables—both direct- and beltdrive—Taurus is equipped with our „Performance Power Supply“ (our „RöNt“ Vacuum Tube Supply is an optional upgrade) and Crystal glass mat, which both facilitates cleaning and improves audio performance. Brinkmann RoNt III Tubed Turntable AC Power Supply

RöNt III is the third generation of Tubed Power Supply for use with all Brinkmann turntables.

This product debuts Brinkmann’s proprietary “Rectifier Tube Simulator” to combine higher performance with lifetime reliability. Like all Brinkmann Audio products, the RöNt is an evolutionary design, refined over 25 years of continuous production. In keeping with this non-obsolescent philosophy, some of the new model’s advancements are retrofittable to earlier versions.

...the result of Helmut Brinkmann’s experimentation with vacuum tubes at every point in the audio signal path. He found that the vacuum in rectifier tubes not only isolates their plates from the cathodes, but also isolates the power line from the drive circuitry, enabling RöNt to function as an application-specific power line purifier for Brinkmann turntables, improving their sound in terms of clarity, transparency and dimensionality.    In 2007, Brinkmann introduced their bespoke “Sinus” Direct Drive and Belt Drive motors, designed and manufactured in-house exclusively for use in Brinkmann Turntables. Sinus motors required more current than the Pabst units utilized in earlier Brinkmann ‘tables, which necessitated the development of RöNt II. The circuit was changed to a single ended class A topography which offered a smoother and more transparent performance. RöNt II utilized two high current, low resistance pentodes (PL36) and one full wave rectifier (5AR4/GZ34).

...the supply of high quality 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier tubes became extremely limited; as a result, Brinkmann has been forced to supply Russian rectifier tubes whose sonics and reliability are not optimal. Fortunately, Brinkmann viewed scarcity as an opportunity for innovation….    The hallmark of the RöNt III is a “Rectifier Tube Simulator“ created by Helmut Brinkmann, which he has named “BZ34” in honor of the GZ34/5AR4 tube previously used in the RöNt II. The BZ34 performs the identical function but without the performance drift, aging and eventual failure to which all vacuum tubes are subject. The starting point for the development of the BZ34 was the Mullard NOS (New, Old Stock) GZ34 tube which sounds the best in the RöNt II. (For this reason, the Mullard comes standard in the RöNt II supplied with the Brinkmann Anniversary Edition Balance.) The NOS Mullard GZ34s are very rare and very expensive, hence not feasible for use in a series-production component. A complex circuit, the BZ34 emulates the function and sound of the GZ34 NOS Mullard tube, without its downsides of wear and failure. The BZ34 has unlimited lifespan, flawless reliability and performance that remains consistently excellent over decades of use. In keeping with Brinkmann’s “Future-Proof” design philosophy, the BZ34 uses the same Octal Tube Connector as the 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier tube it replaces, making it retrofittable to existing RöNt II units. By installing our BZ34, RöNt II owners can enjoy our latest technological advances, protecting their investment by enabling older units to approach the performance, longevity, reliability and consistency of our State-of-the-Art RöNt III which offers even greater advantages in all of these areas.     Aside from the BZ34, RöNt III incorporates additional circuit modifications including a redesigned high-voltage path for increased transparency, more palpable and dimensional sound, as well as more musical detail and “Flow.” RöNt III also benefits from upgraded transformers. RöNt II and RöNt III are otherwise identical in terms of features and aesthetics. Both are 100% compatible with all Brinkmann Audio Turntables.
