You will recognise the significance of – and then insist on possessing – the control. Performance and sheer quality are reflected in this fine speaker.  Manufactured by highly trained. Vastly experienced Loudspeaker experts at the headquarters of Wharfedale, in Huntingdon. Cambridgeshire – Dovedale is built in the home of British Hi-Fi.  The new Dovedale further exemplifies Wharfedale’s legacy in fine loudspeaker design and manufacturing: balancing fine craftsmanship, natural sound quality, and affordability inside a beautifully proportioned loudspeaker that has been bought in its millions right across the globe through its various incarnations.

Dovedale has an unmistakable family resemblance. It is a three-way standmount model – a rarity in the modern era, retaining similar proportions to the classic Dovedale models of yesteryear. Its wood-veneered cabinet has a vintage look, yet the standard of finish is distinctly contemporary – a tribute to the skilled craftsmanship required to produce such a loudspeaker.  The original Dovedale models – dating back to the W2 in 1959, which was updated to the W2 / Dovedale in 1965 – were well known for their rich and natural sound quality. The new model retains these attributes but upgrades the performance in every department, with free-breathing dynamics and incredible definition across the bass and midrange.  A celebration of the Landmark goth anniversary of the Wharfedale brand. The Wharfedale Dovedale is more than just a reintroduction of a classic model. This is a speaker that exudes authenticity. Designed to appeal to the dedicated music-lover.

Dovedale signifies the reintroduction of the class and quality of British manufacturing to the Wharfedale brand portfolio.  Dovedale is built in the home of British Hi-Fi at Wharfedale’s UK headquarters in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. Incorporating key manufacturing, assembly and finishing processes for specially selected products in addition to the R&D function already located there. A 9,000ft2 production facility has been added to the existing building, including a new anechoic chamber, making a total of 25,000ft2 of office, lab and manufacturing space. It is here that Dovedale is manufactured by highly trained, vastly experienced loudspeaker experts.

Class lasts a lifetime! The Wharfedale Dovedale portrays the timeless design of a stunning Loudspeaker cabinet with an authentic Legacy. Traditional. simple, beautiful yet highly evolved and a thoroughly modern design.  Bang up to date – utilising a mixture of traditional and advanced technology, for optimum performance whilst staying true to the legacy.  Critical analysis of the performance of each cabinet has resulted in the application of precision shaped and positioned internal bracing. This ensures that cabinet resonances are controlled to well below the level of the music signal, allowing you to hear through to the recording without coloration intruding on your listening enjoyment.

A three-way speaker in the classic Wharfedale tradition – beautifully hand veneered with an inset front baffle and traditional cloth grille.  Both the midrange unit and treble unit are offset on the front baffle to scatter reflections from the cabinet edges and provide superior focus of the stereo image, and the speakers are provided in handed pairs so that sonic images in the stereo sound field are always accurately placed. The speakers have been fine-tuned acoustically through hundreds of hours of listening tests with all manner of music to ensure the cabinet, crossover and drive units work together coherently and seamlessly.

Dovedale makes use of its wide baffle by incorporating a large (by modern standards) bass driver with a 260mm (10-inch) Kevlar® cone – mounted on a rigid die cast chassis, this combination delivers a rich, controlled bass output with superb dynamic performance.

The 10in (25cm) bass and 5in (13cm) midrange drivers incorporate cones made from woven Kevlar – an exceptionally strong and stiff synthetic fibre discovered in the same year as the original Dovedale’s release and not used for loudspeaker diaphragms until a decade later.

The 25mm fabric-dome treble unit with a ceramic magnet, featured throughout Wharfedale’s Heritage Series, has been further improved by incorporating a rear chamber, damped to absorb the output from the back of the dome. This also has the advantage of reducing the resonant frequency of the treble unit to well below the crossover region, allowing full treble detail and harmonics to be revealed without affecting the smoothness of the high-frequency performance.

The Wharfedale Dovedale stand is custom designed in conjunction with Wharfedale’s Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau. Every aspect is considered to create the perfect presentation of the Dovedale Heritage speaker.  Hand-made in the England, with robust British steel and a luxurious furniture-grade glass insert, the Dovedale stand reinforces the no-compromise approach in the ‘Made in the UK’ theme for the return of the Wharfedale Dovedale.  The design is based upon open frame made of carbon steel and furniture-grade glass inserts at the top and bottom. All bar one of the uprights are filled with damping material – the other allows for cable management ­­­– with four large stainless-steel spikes at the base. The stand ensures each speaker is positioned at the correct height, as well as reducing bass/floor interactions and providing stable and torsionally rigid support. The package is completed by a set of stainless-steel spike seats and a pair of handling gloves.

The bass unit features Wharfedale’s innovative woven Kevlar cone mounted on a rigid die-cast chassis, this combination delivering a rich, detailed bass/midrange output with superb dynamic performance. High frequencies are handled by a woven textile soft dome treble unit with high flux ferrite magnet, engineered for smooth, detailed HF extension.

These drive units are combined by a highly researched crossover that is near inaudible to the listener, resulting in a coherent, seamless musical output that is both thrilling and natural in its rendition of any source material.

The Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeter utilised in the EVO4 range is a radically different way of moving air than a conventional dome tweeter. A large, pleated lightweight diaphragm is driven across its surface by rows of strategically placed magnets. Not only is this an efficient way of moving air, but it is also very accurate as the diaphragm is under close control of the motor system at all times. The result is a wide bandwidth transducer that achieves low distortion and delivers exceptional musical detail without being “bright,” harsh, and fatiguing.

To match the EVO4 AMT, Wharfedale has developed a fast, responsive, and highly efficient dome midrange. The fabric dome, damped with a plasticizer coating, is vented into a large and specially shaped rear chamber to scatter and absorb back energy that would ordinarily reflect through the dome front surface, out of phase and distorted. By absorbing and dispersing the rear energy, this driver delivers vastly improved detail, lower distortion, and colouration.   The large, damped rear chamber acts much like a woofer enclosure, permitting extended low-frequency performance. This midrange unit boasts a linear response from 800Hz to 5kHz, an astonishing bandwidth. This wide bandwidth allowed Wharfedale designers to lower the midrange-to-woofer crossover point so that the midrange driver handles more of the lower midrange for broader dispersion and greater clarity.   Thanks to its high flux magnet, the EVO4 midrange dome also has high efficiency, ideally matched to that of the AMT, enabling it to respond easily and quickly to the music's dynamics. The wide dispersion of this dome and AMT combination ensures that you'll hear all the musical detail no matter where you sit.  The dome midrange and the AMT tweeter contribute to the incredibly open, spacious, and deep soundstage of the EVO4s, usually not found in dynamic "box" speakers in this price category.

EVO4 marries the low distortion motor system developed for the ELYSIAN bass units to a Kevlar cone. Woven Kevlar (the material of bullet-proof vests) is a superior material for woofer cones. It is both stiff, ensuring ideal piston motion up to frequencies above its crossover point well-damped. The cone is fitted with a low loss rubber surround that absorbs resonance modes that may build up in the cone. EVO4’s woofers blend perfectly with the dome midrange to produce a desirable lower-midrange response. Bass voices and lower register instruments have the weight, warmth, and articulation of a live performance, without the muddiness and loss of clarity of lesser designs. Simultaneously, EVO4’s bass is deep, impactful, and powerful yet tuneful, musical, and precise.

Like ELYSIAN, EVO4 models use the most advanced version of the unique Wharfedale Slot Loaded Profiled Port (SLPP) system. As with all other bass port designs, the woofer's rear radiation is not wasted but vented into the room. But that is where the similarities end.   The bass energy in the enclosure is under high pressure. In conventional port designs, when the bass waves abruptly exit into the low-pressure room, air turbulence occurs. This turbulence wastes bass and often causes annoying "chuffing" or popping sounds, sometimes referred to as port noise.   In the SLPP system, both ends of the port tube are flared with a semi-parabolic flange to linearise airflow through the tube. The low-frequency energy is then vented to a slot at the speaker's base, specially profiled to equalize the high internal pressure to the low pressure in the room. The result is an entirely natural recreation of bass instruments' fundamental notes presented with authority and articulation, without port-induced distortion and noise.

The best drivers and crossovers in the world would be naught in a poorly made, highly resonant enclosure. EVO4 cabinet walls employ a multi-layered sandwich design with soft, high loss chipboard sandwiched between stiff MDF layers. The dissimilar resonance characteristic of each material serves to cancel the other’s resonance for vibration and colouration-free performance. All of the drivers’ acoustic energy launches directly into the room instead of vibrating the enclosure. You will enjoy the kind of clarity, detail and three-dimensional imaging one expects from the costliest loudspeakers (but at a far more accessible price).   Inside the cabinet, Intelligent Spot Bracing connects opposite walls with a wood brace to further reduce panel flexing and vibration. These braces are precisely modelled by computer simulation to improve upon the commonplace ‘figure of eight’ brace, which may transfer resonance from one wall to another.   EVO4 cabinet edges are contoured to minimise colouration-inducing diffraction. Book-matched real wood veneer finishes all visible sides of the EVO cabinet. Book matching creates symmetry and yields maximum continuity of grain. This type of pattern is usually most pleasing to the eye. EVO4s are only sold in pairs to ensure that the veneer pattern is similar for both speakers. Choose the real wood veneer finish that suits your style – black ash, white ash, or walnut. The fit and finish of EVO4 cabinets are extraordinary, reminiscent of speakers selling for two to ten times the price. Looks do matter.

EVO4 models provide two sets of high quality 5-way binding post terminals for optional bi-wire connection. The terminals are angled, allowing easier access and neater wire management.
