The two-way design has been a strong piece of brand identity for Sonus faber products. In general, hi-fi enthusiasts deem the two-way loudspeaker system as one of the purest systems achievable. For this reason, the Maxima Amator was a fun project for us, serving as the glorification of successfully merging two speakers to achieve a unique emotion with the maximum representation of the ``Voice of Sonus faber” – a goal to achieve natural sound.

A Storied History of Italian Craftsmanship

The final step of the long design process of Maxima Amator was, as always, the “tuning by ear”. Beside the technique, the R&D team relied on the listening experience and the emotions of Music, because Sonus faber is made of this: passion for knowledge, appreciation of beauty and commitment to Italian tradition and craftsmanship.

The solid wood is a living material that continuously changes over time. Due to this, the Maxima Amator’s large cabinet had to be meticulously studied and fine-tuned to avoid the risk of deformation or breakage as the wood ages. Sonus faber was able to overcome this limit thanks to modern wood drying methods, use of internal structural ribs fixed with flexible glues, and new CNC methods that allow us to maintain a tighter tolerance compared to that of the past. After the cabinet’s studies and the drivers’ selection, we focused on defining the perfect tonal balance of the project.  The result is the IFF Crossover “Interactive Fusion Filtering” the perfect sonic performance beyond our proven classic implementations. This is the heart and the brain of Maxima Amator that allows us to to obtain a total fusion of the two drivers for an extremely natural and fluid sound reproduction.

Sonus faber Amati - A stunning addition to the Sonus faber Homage Tradition Collection - 

Homage Tradition collection is a new tribute to the mastery of Italian violin-making; the now classic lute shape, the hallmark of Sonus faber production, has been revisited and taken to new heights by embodying both the classic lines of the Homage collection and those of the Lilium cabinet, thus giving new volumes to the speakers of this collection.

The world of ancient shipyards and the tradition of Italy’s shipwrights are the essence of the inspiration of the design of the Tradition collection. The new Wengè finish with maple inlays is the true aesthetic novelty of the collection and immediately links it with the elegant and timeless design of the most famous Italian motor-boats of the ``La Dolce Vita`` with their iconic wooden hulls.

All the speakers of the Homage Tradition collection are the fruit of painstaking electro-acoustic research. The patents and technological solutions that have been developed from the Sonus faber to Aida and implemented and adapted with Lilium, Il Cremonese and the Olympica collection are once again applied and taken to even greater heights, adapting them to the needs of these new projects.

The creation of Olympica collection, launched during the 2013 edition of the Munich Hi End Show, represented for Sonus faber a return to the deep roots of its traditions. In 2014 the Vicenza-based company gets back to the Bavarian International Fair with a new project for its audience. Sonus faber returns, three years later, to design a new full frequency range Hi End floorstanding speaker, built around the knowledge gained through the creation of Aida: Lilium.

Power and grace. Dynamic and melody. Fullness and void. Kindness and impetuosity. Harmony and chaos. Seemingly opposite strong contrasts that co- exist in the music. Lilium has been designed to shape those great contrasts expressed by music. It is the will of synthesis of two opposite elements: two separate identities that, although working independently one from each other, cooperate inside the same shape. The creation of a shape that holds two distinct elements has been a big challenge from a technical point of view and from a design one as well. Everything was basically about the need find a new way to put together the large volume required to reproduce the very low frequencies, with the structure dedicated to the reproduction of the main portion of the audible spectrum. The marked separation between these two elements is made visually clear by the use of different materials: finely wrought walnut wood for the front part and a definitely softer material – leather – for the rear enclosure. We have decided to adopt the organic style of the natural shapes, which is the family the Lilium belongs to. Undoubtedly, this result marks a further step forward in the stylistic and acoustic research by Sonus faber.

“Lyra shape” design, progressive thickness triple curvature cabinet walls damped spread resonance spectrum system, Sub–structural ribs are strategically placed for total rejection of spurious vibrations and standing waves control.

Sonus faber SW26 XT-08.  Sonus faber designed a 260 mm infra woofer, lightweight hard paper composite sandwich cone  technology for a maximum rigidity and implemented it in an acoustically amorphous passive radiator tuned separated enclosure.

Non-resonant design, optimized amplitude/phase response for optimal space/time performance. “Paracross topology”. The impedance at low frequencies is controlled for a clear and friendly amplifier performance.

Sonus faber “Arrow Point” DAD (Damped Apex Dome, synthesis of the classic dome and ring transducer) H28 XTR-04. A Sonus faber designed 28 mm moving coil driver, with Sonus faber’s vibration optimized mechanical interface.

Sonus faber M18 XTR-04. A Sonus faber designed 180 mm neodymium magnet system ultra dynamic linearity midrange. CCAW wire is used on a composite former “eddy current free” voice coil. The dynamically linear magnetic field motor incorporates triple Kellog/Goeller rings. A special custom diaphragm is made with a real time air dried non pressed blend of traditional cellulose pulp, kapok, kenaf and other natural fibers, developed according to the most natural sound. To further inhibit any residual cone coloration we are using a transparent viscous surface damping coating. The same way as the tweeter, the midrange is decoupled from the main baffle board and designed synergistically with its optimized “acoustic chamber”. A special coaxial anti-compressor is used, designed to remove cavity resonances and distortions.

Sonus faber W18XTR-16. A triple of Sonus faber designed 180 mm lightweight “sandwich” cone structure (high-tech syntactic foam core and two external surface skins of cellulose pulp) woofers are integrated in an acoustically amorphous “stealth reflex” chamber. Designed to blend perfectly with the special midrange and, at the same time, to have absolute definition in their range: the sandwich structure with outer paper pulp skins has the same sonic character of the midrange cone. A powerful long stroke motor system with a 1,5” controlled “eddy current” voice coil is implemented for high speed, performance and linearity.

Lilium has been designed to shape those great contrasts expressed by music. It is the will of synthesis of two opposite elements: two separate identities that, although working independently one from each other, cooperate inside the same shape. The creation of a shape that holds two distinct elements has been a big challenge from a technical point of view and from a design one as well. Everything was basically about the need find a new way to put together the large volume requiredto reproduce the very low frequencies, with the structure dedicated to the reproduction of the main portion of the audible spectrum. The marked separation between these two elements is made visually clear by the use of different materials: finely wrought walnut wood for the front part and a definitely softer material – leather – for the rear enclosure. We have decided to adopt the organic style of the natural shapes, which is the family the Lilium belongs to. Undoubtedly, this result marks a further step forward in the stylistic and acoustic research by Sonus faber.

A Familiar Design, Elevated To New Heights

While maintaining its captivating design elements, Aida presents upgrades in sound engineering. Its “Silent Case” curved on both sides ensures great control over the energy within the speakers. The signature warm and involving timber is preserved through Mid and High frequencies that encapsulates the “Voice of Sonus faber”, determined by a 28mm silk dome tweeter and a mid-range with cellulose pulp cone.

Aida manages sound complexities with advanced resonance control technology. Its precision crossover ensures smooth transitions between frequencies, preserving the dimensionality of sound and perceived size of the sound-stage.

The TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) is a device normally used in the biggest world’s skyscrapers and consists in some suspended masses placed inside of the speakers - while vibrating in antiphase, the TMD erases main vibrations and allows a clearer bass reproduction and a better silence reproduction.

This patented system allows a great reduction of the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) and a better bass extension while eliminating spurious vibration coming from the air passage inside the reflex duct and allowing a reduction of dimensions of acoustic chambers.

The most radical among the changes between the two generations of Aida is the selection of all-new driver systems, all of them featuring a Neodymium motor system that enhance the “Ultra Dynamic Linearity” characteristic.

Sonus faber® Amati 9" Wenge Floor Standing Speakers

Nine layers of natural wood are combined according to the grain and finished with nine coats of beautiful lacquer. Then, multiple steps of sanding and brushing by hand ensure every Sonus faber speaker is a joy to behold. In keeping with the ethos of Homage, Amati Generation 5° marries state-of-the-art sound technology with visual artistry in three stunning finishes: Graphite, Wenge and Red.

A standard soft dome tweeter's apex anti-phase behavior is responsible for early high-frequency roll-off. The D.A.D. tweeter ensures better high-frequency reproduction by dampening the apex of the silk soft dome tweeter, avoiding anti-phase behavior.

The Amati, Serafino and Vox models contain a major new innovation for the collection: InTono. Thanks to the internal cabinet’s special structure, which reduces the acoustic pressure generated within a given frequency range, these new loudspeakers always produce midrange frequencies free of any coloration.

Discovered through computer simulation, the new Phase Plug is another new innovation which optimizes the air movement of the driver to reduce turbulence while guiding soundwaves to reinforce their propagation into a more consistent wave pattern at listening distances. The result is a smoother frequency response with higher levels of clarity both on and off axis.

Phase Coherent Crossover is designed to deliver immersive, three-dimensional sound throughout the room. The hand soldered hi-end custom spec capacitors and inductors create sonic clarity while handling high power levels and lowering the noise floor.

Functioning as the exponential section of the duct and thanks to its design, Stealth Ultraflex improves the aerodynamic flow of the air stream emitted by the reflex ducts and is an integral part of the system. The extruded aluminum parts give further structural rigidity to the cabinet and now come in a beautiful deep grey brushed aluminum finish.

The Amati Generation 5° is equipped with a stunning new midrange driver and woofer. Powerful Neodynium magnets drive voice coil with powerful control and precision in the midrange. The new woofer leverages ultralight CCAW voice coils in a neodymium slug for quick speed and improved power and heat handling. The spider and surround were redesigned using computer simulations applying the Finite Element Method. This translates to long-lasting detailed sound that won’t muffle or overheat the Amati Generation 5° system.

The speaker system is mechanically decoupled from the floor by the patented Z.V.T. system (Zero Vibration Transmission). Z.V.T. is an optimized suspension system with alternating metal/elastomer/metal surfaces, which overlap inside the base plate, legs and footer spikes. This system substantially reduces acoustic feedback and the transmission of spurious vibrations into the listening room.
