NAIM® Black Turntable Preamplifier

The SuperLine is a high performance moving-coil phono stage built in the Naim Audio aluminum reference enclosure with an anodized front panel. It brings all Naim Audio's latest analogue electronic design and environmental isolation techniques to bear on the most delicate analog element of any hi-fi system - the moving-coil phono signal. The SuperLine requires an external power supply - either the power supply output of an appropriate Naim Audio preamplifier or the SUPERNAIT and NAIT XS integrated amplifiers, or, for optimum performance, a dedicated FlatCap XS, HiCap or SuperCap.

SuperLine brings out all that's best in vinyl replay - timing, pitch accuracy, clarity, detail, and the unmistakable naturalness that records can deliver in abundance.

The heart of the SuperLine is a new, two-stage single-ended Class A discrete amplifier with part-passive RIAA filtering that runs off 25 internally regulated power supplies and features the transistor "quiet room" thermal isolation technique originally developed for the NAP 500 power amplifier. Environmental isolation is also ensured by the SuperLine's massive sub-chassis and high-Q spring suspension system - used here for the first time on a phono amplifier.

Duplicate phono and BNC sockets provide input versatility, and cartridge impedance matching adjustment is provided by four resistive and three capacitive load plugs. In combination with the SuperLine's internal input load, twenty different standard load combinations are possible.

The SuperLine is also available in a lower gain model, SuperLine E. The SuperLine E is identical to the standard SuperLine except that is has been designed for use with cartridges that have a higher output voltage than most popular moving coils: for example high output moving coils.

The Aria is an “all analogue amplifier” with no digital control circuitry. The fully aluminium case screens the internal circuit from any stray RFI signals. Our designers have avoided including any superfluous gadgets as they obstruct the signal path and degrade the sound quality. The Aria incorporates many innovative design ideas including a self-adjusting servo control to keep the MC input circuit at its optimum, compensating for any variations in ambient or operating temperature.

Both stages have their own separate input sockets and input pre-amplifier circuitry. This enabled us to design bespoke input circuitry for each cartridge type without compromise. Signal switching is performed at high level and low impedance (via relays) ensuring there is no degradation of the signal.

The MM input uses low noise, bipolar input transistors also configured as a compound pair. There are two separate power supplies for each channel and further sub-power supplies for each of the low noise input circuits. Nichicon FG electrolytic capacitors have been used in critical positions throughout the power supplies. Polypropylene capacitors have been used in the signal path and equalization networks. Discrete circuitry is used throughout the signal path ensuring full control of the circuit design.

The MC input uses parallel connected, low noise FETs (Field Effect Transistors) configured as a compound pair. The use of FET transistors ensures there is no bias current flowing in the cartridge coil so as not to upset the delicate magnetic geometry of the cartridge. The MC input has the provision for selecting resistive input loading of 70 Ω to 400 Ω and capacitive loading of 1000 pF to 4200 pF. The input sensitivity can be changed by 6 dB via the back panel.
